Wimbledon Introduces Video Challenge System This Season.

Wimbledon court with replay system

Wimbledon will follow the American and Australian Opens in employing video review technology.

Video review technology are set to arrive at The Championships this year.

Athletes are granted the right to contest particular calls made by the chair umpire, mirroring the practice currently in operation at each of the US Open and the Australian Open.

This innovation is slated for use on Centre Court and Court One throughout the tournament and on the remaining featured courts when they are staging singles contests.

This step follows just a season following the All England Club implemented ELC, which terminated the centuries-old role of line judges.

Reviewable Decisions

Competitors cannot to challenge the accuracy of the ELC system, but are allowed to request the official to re-examine specific situations, including:

  • If a tennis ball has bounced twice.
  • Whether a shot touched an opponent's racquet or person during play.
  • Possible interference at the conclusion of a point.

Notably, there is no cap on the amount of challenges a competitor can request.

Case in Point

An illustrative example took place in a recent tournament recently, where Daniil Medvedev initiated the review system against his opponent.

The British player admitted it was a tough call for the official, but believed his rival had "used the regulations effectively."

Official Aurelie Tourte viewed a video and ruled Draper was responsible for hindrance, awarding the point to Medvedev.

Growing Trend

Video reviews are not exclusive to major tournaments. The system has been in use at the American major since 2023 and the Aussie Open this year.

Additionally, it is becoming more common on the WTA circuit, and by the coming year the men's ATP Tour will have video reviews implemented at every one of its tournaments.

Further Updates

A further innovation at The Championships 2025 will be the addition of graphical cues on displays to complement the verbal announcements from the ELC system.

This solves instances where the crowd have occasionally been uncertain whether a shot was in or out.

Finally, with exactly a century of days remaining until the beginning of the tournament, the AELTC have also revealed an expansion in daily attendance at the qualifying competition in the qualifying venue.
